“We are very excited the VMAs will return to their original home, the greatest city on earth,” Mayor Bill de Blasio told MTV News in an email interview in April. “We’re the cultural capital of the world, and there are so many fans here in New York, so it’s so natural for them to be here.” Julie Menin, the commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, told MTV News, “[This] reinforces that New York City is, indeed, the entertainment capital of the world.”
